3Well, it's a great diet that has changed my life, but...

First and foremost, intermittent fasting has changed my life for the better. I first learned about fasting through the website Leangains.com about 2 years ago, which led me to Brad Pilon's "Eat, Stop, Eat" program around the same period. Since then, I've lost at least 60lbs and have kept it off. I'm more active then ever thanks to intermittent fasting, calisthenics and Brazilian jiujitsu. If you're looking for a sustainable nutrition program that is painlessly easy and healthy, then intermittent fasting is exactly what you want.Having said all that, "The 8 Hour Diet" was [allegedly] stolen from leangains.com, Martin Berkhan's website. He has been writing about the 16/8 fasting diet for years, which in turn has turned the bodybuilding world upside down. He has changed countless amounts of blog and forum members lives with his methods. It's a shame "The 8 Hour Diet" makes no mention of him or his website.So, if you're interested in this book, check out Leangains.com for original (and FREE!) version of the diet.My actual review of this book below.The book is about sustaining from any calories for 16 hours then feeding for 8 hours every day. One thing I did not like was how the author routinely uses research from alternate day fasting (which requires fasting for 24-36 hours, every other day) in order to support the 16/8 diet. It's possible that 16 hours is not enough time for the body to receive the same benefits as going 24-36 hours every other day would.Typical of Rodale Publishing, in my opinion, there are numerous grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the book. However, this does not take away from the reading experience; still a decent read (despite being [allegedly] stolen from Martin Berkhan).In closing, if you're interested in learning more about intermittent fasting before buying this book, head over to the following websites for everything you would ever need to know. 5Easy, Simple, and It Worked For Me!

I loved this book. The author makes a simple, clear, compelling argument for intermittent fasting which I used successfully for nearly twenty years. When I was ill at age 40 health care people insisted I didn't eat enough. I decided to test their theories. I ate more and in two years gained 40 lbs going from a healthy 130 to an obese 170 (I'm 5'3, female) and I was still sick. So I went back to following my way of eating plus increased my exercise intensity and lost 30 lbs. But I did not add back the intermittent fasting and that last 10 lbs would not go. I bought this book Monday and lost 3 lbs by Sunday! And it was Xmas week!This book reminded me of everything I believe in about the body's need to rest and not constantly be working day and night to process food. It does not makes sense to eat around the clock, we have only had access to excess food a hundred years or so. For most of human history we ate far less than we do now. And we slept an average of 3 hours a night more before the invention of the lightbulb. I'm amazed how many people fear not eating enough when it is clear that we eat too much.My favorite parts of the book were: A clear time schedule of a typical day for you to follow, a chapter that explains how you can use this diet with whatever diet you are on, and substitutions for vegetarian and vegans. The book was engaging, well-written, funny, and a quick read.About the 8 minutes a day of exercise: for sedentary people it is better than nothing. And once people start exercising they may end up exercising more than the 8 minutes. I think people should find something they love and do it for fun, not stress over exercising. Science shows that stress makes us put on weight.UPDATE: Many people here say the diet did not work for them so it may not work for everyone. Every body is different. I lost 10 lbs in one month and that's all I needed to lose. But I ate the 8 super-foods everyday and after filling up on them I didn't eat any junk. I also workout daily. I think giving it a try is worth it but you really do need to exercise and eat the 8 everyday in order to test it properly.

I ordered this book about two weeks ago, but decided to wait until after the holidays to start the program due to parties, out-of-town guests, etc. Today marked exactly one week that I have been doing the plan and so far I have lost 7 pounds,I have much more energy, and those late night cravings have went away! I no longer have to obsess over calories, points, what to eat and what not to eat. This book does an awesome job of making weight loss simple. It is very well written and easy to follow. It's just like you're having a conversation with the author. I noticed that this book has been accused of stealing from a company called LeanGaines, but I didn't see it that way. The author made several mentions to the fact that intermmitent fasting is nothing new and has been around for a long time. At no time does he credit himself for this eating schedule. He states clearly that he heard about it and tried it and it worked so well for him that he wanted to share it with others. I feel the author's goal in this book was just to break it down and explain why it works and to give tips and advice on how to get started and maintain on the program. Just try it for a week and see for yourself, don't take anyone else's word. You won't regret it!
